Catherine Stewart is a playwright and choreographer who, as a participatory artist, invites communities into acts of storytelling that satirically interrogate the systems that fail us through the perspective of dynamic women+ characters. As the founder of Make Create More, Catherine leads a vibrant collective of artists co-designing projects with communities that function as both performance and dialogue, sparking cultural conversations that ripple beyond the stage and screen. Her recent works include You, Me, and the Woodsmoke, a participatory theatre piece exploring rupture and repair in human and ecological relationships, and Intimate Surveillance, a play interrogating autonomy and technology that won the Neukom Literary Arts Award from Dartmouth College/Northern Stage and the Gold Prize in the Clauder Competition at Portland Stage. Catherine is committed to building spaces where creativity and community converge—places where art becomes a catalyst for justice and cultural change. She has developed her practice as part of the Lincoln Center Directors’ Lab, Jacob’s Pillow Curriculum in Motion Institute, and as a Creative Community Fellow at National Arts Strategies. She is also a certified practitioner of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process, helping individuals and organizations cultivate robust and respectful feedback strategies.
